CHAPTER 15 PART 1
“Fill out these forms please, the doctor will let you in in a minute.”
“Okay,” Jill accepted the forms nervously and sat down on a chair, Tom sat down beside her and Jess took a seat at the other side.
“Name, date of birth, living arrangement, name father, …” Jill sighed, that was a long list. She started to fill in the blank parts.
When she was done Jess took the papers from her and gave them back to the receptionist. She sat down again next to Jill and took her hand “Everything will be alright,” she reassured her. Jill tried to smile at Jess but failed miserably.
“Jill Hanot?”
“Yes,” Jill, Jess and Tom replied simultaneously.
“You can come in now.”
“Oh, okay,” Jill got up and the two others followed her.
“Take a seat,” the doctor offered them, “My name is Alyssa Claerhout, but just call me Lys, please.” She smiled at the 3 young people in front of her, well they were only a few years younger than her, since she was 31, but anyway.
“So,” Lys said, while looking at the papers Jill had just filled in, “why did you decide to changed gynaecologists if I may ask?”
“Change? I never changed.” Jill said confused.
“But it says here that you are in the 22nd week of your pregnancy.” Jill nodded, “And you haven’t been to a gynaecologist in all this time?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Jill shrugged, “I don’t know. My doctor said I was pregnant, so I figured out it would be okay that I came by around my 5th month…”
Lys smiled at the girl, it was obviously a new situation for her, “Well Jill, normally you’ve got to come to me once a month, and from 28 weeks twice a month. And once you’ve passed 35 weeks, you should come at least once a week.”
“Oh,” Jill looked confused, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know that.”
“Well, it’s no problem, but from now on, I would like to see you regularly. That way, if something goes wrong we can interfere quickly.”
Jill nodded.
Lys looked at Jess and Tom now, “And you two are?”
“Oh, I’m Tom, the father,” Tom offered.
“Euh, I’m… Jess?”
“She my friend,” Jill interrupted, “and Tom’s girlfriend.”
Lys looked a bit surprised at this.
“Long story”
“Okay,” Lys nodded, not asking further, “Well Jill, normally the first time I meet with a patient, we mostly talk. But since this is your first appointment and you’re already so far along, we’ll do some test. Now, don’t be afraid they’re just tests that are required, they check the health of you and your baby, it’s routine. Afterwards we’ll make an echo and you’ll get to see the baby. I probably can tell you the sex too, if you want to know. But first things first, how are you feeling?”
“I, fine, I guess.”
“Had any pregnancy problems? Like feeling sick or having cravings?”
“Well, I felt sick in the morning in the beginning, but I haven’t got that anymore. But that’s it…”
“Well, you’re extremely lucky then, considering it’s your first pregnancy. You’ll probably have some troubles later on though, like mood changes and cravings, maybe some bladder problems.”
“Bladder problems?”
“Yes, well, in most pregnancies the baby, once it grows, will put pressure on the bladder, so you’ll have to use the bathroom more often.”
“Oh, okay.”
“Nothing to worry about, though. Have you already felt the baby move?”
“I,…” Jill paused, “I don’t know, maybe?” she looked at the doctor.
“Well, it’s normal, most women feel their baby for the first time between 16 and 22 weeks, but don’t recognize it. I can’t really tell you how it feels, some say it’s like a goldfish swimming in your belly, other say it’s like butterflies. You’ll learn to recognize it.”
Jill nodded.
“Are we able to feel it to?” Tom asked interestedly, “I mean, if we lay our hands on her belly or something?”
Lys smiled at the young men’s interest. Not many young fathers were involved in an unwanted pregnancy, “Yes, you should be able to feel it.”
“Cool.”
“Well Jill, do you have any questions left?”
Jill shook her head.
“Okay, well if you think of any, don’t hesitate to ask. So, you can lay down on the bed now and I’ll do some test, and then we’ll do the echo.”
