CHAPTER 15 PART 2

Jill lay down on the bed and the doctor took some blood and did some other tests. Then she put Jill’s shirt a bit up and did a jelly substance on her belly. Jess stood next to Jill and took her hand, softly squeezing it. Jill took a deep breath and smiled at Tom and Jess. Tom stood right behind Jess and smiled back.
“Are you ready?” doctor Lys asked.
Jill nodded, “yeah”
The doctor put the machine on Jill’s belly and turned on the little screen. You could immediately hear the heartbeat.
Three pairs of eyes were fixating on the screen. Lys pointed at it, “You see this? That’s your baby.”
Jill didn’t move or say anything. Tom on the other hand took Jess’s hand and squeezed it. He got this watery smile on his face.
“Would you like to know the sex?”
Tom looked at Jill, but she still didn’t respond. “I don’t know.”
“Well, I’ll leave the three of you alone for a couple of minutes.”
Doctor Lys left the room and Jess smiled, “It’s beautiful, isn’t it? So weird that, that is inside of you.”
“I don’t see it” Jill said blankly.
“What?”
“I don’t see a fucking thing on that screen. It’s just a grey screen to me. I don’t see no baby.”
“Jill, honey.”
“Don’t ‘honey’ me. What kind of lazy ass mom will I be if I can’t even recognize my own baby.”
“Jill, calm down, do you see this?” Jess pointed at the screen.
“That dark-grey spot? Yes.”
“That’s it, that’s your baby.”
“That’s my baby?”
“Yes.”
“Oh, well… I can see that… But it’s so small!”
“Well, it’ll grow”
“Yeah…”
“So,” Tom interrupted, “do we want to know the sex of the baby?”
“They can see that? On that small thing? I can’t even see the baby, and Lys can see whether it’s a boy or a girl?”
“I guess.”
“Yes, I want to know.” Jill smiled.
At that moment the doctor walked back in. “I got you guys a copy of the picture, so you can take it home.”
“Oh, could we have some extra?” Tom asked.
“Yes, I would like to have one too.” Jess said.
“Yeah, and I want to send one to my mom and one to my dad, and Bill asked one too.”
“I would like to send one to my parents too.” Jill added
Lys smiled, “of course, how many do you want?”
Tom started counting “Well, me, Jill, Jess, Bill, my mom and dad and Jill’s parents… That’s 8.”
“Okay, I’ll ask 8 extra copies then,” Lys said and she picked up the phone.
“Oh, make that 9, so I can send one to my granny too.”
“Nine it is.”
Lys put the phone back down. “You can get them at the receptionist when you leave.
So, have you decided whether you want to know the sex of the baby?”
“Yeah, we’d like to know” Jill answered.
“Well, you’re going to have a…”
